chapter 5 page 87 note 24
Newton's claims have been countered by several authorities, and there is a detailed synopsis of the scholarly debate by Carl Olof Jonsson, at http://www.607v587.com/webpage%2010.htm
See also his book The Gentile Times Reconsidered, 1983 and 1986.
According to Olof, the consensus even amongst those who do not reject Newton's thesis is that he has nevertheless overstated his case, and that Ptolemy at worst tailored his results to fit his theories, rather than deliberately falsifying existing data. From the viewpoint of the philosophy of astrology, the important question to explore remains the nature of the metaphysical ground which appears to have granted the Ptolemaic construction such unquestioned authority, eclipsing any other sustained way of imagining astrology.
